The Eye of Horus: Kemet's gift to the world
Ancient Egypt — known in its own language as Kemet — is among the oldest recorded spiritual civilisations in human history, and its understanding of consciousness was extraordinarily advanced. The Eye of Horus (Wedjat) was not simply a protective symbol: it was a representation of the capacity for whole-brain perception, the integration of analytical and intuitive sight, and the divine faculty of seeing truly.
The myth of Horus, who lost his eye in battle and had it restored, encodes a teaching about the recovery of spiritual perception after wounding — a theme that resonates with every human being who has walked through loss and found, on the other side, that they see more clearly than they did before.
Kemetic philosophy also understood the relationship between the pineal gland — what Descartes would later call "the seat of the soul" — and heightened states of consciousness. Ancestral sight in sub-Saharan traditions
Across many sub-Saharan African traditions, the ability to perceive beyond the ordinary — to receive visions, to communicate with ancestors, to sense what is coming before it arrives — is understood as a natural human capacity, not a supernatural exception reserved for special individuals.
In Zulu cosmology, the isangoma (diviner) is someone who has developed and been initiated into this perceptual capacity. The training is rigorous, embodied, and relational — it involves learning to read signs, to interpret dreams, to listen to the ancestors, and to bring their wisdom into service of the community. This is not the performance of psychic power; it is the disciplined development of inner sight in the service of life.
Among the Akan people of West Africa, the concept of sunsum — the personal spiritual force or soul — is understood to perceive and interact with dimensions of reality that the physical body cannot. Akan cosmology recognises multiple levels of reality and multiple modes of perception, with the development of spiritual sight seen as part of the natural maturation of a human being.
What African traditions offer that western spirituality often misses
Much of the Western spiritual conversation about the third eye is highly individualistic: open your third eye, develop your psychic gifts, expand your personal consciousness. African spiritual traditions tend to situate inner sight within relationship — with community, with ancestors, with the land, with the living fabric of existence.
In these traditions, spiritual perception is not primarily a personal achievement. It is a responsibility. What you are given to see, you are given in order to serve. The awakened inner sight of an isangoma or a Kemetic initiate exists not for personal power but for the healing and guidance of others.
